The New Zealand Building Code is currently under review with submissions closed in May of 2021.

The key areas of focus and potential change that affect window glazing selection are thermal performance and natural light provisions.

The other major change is the 3 climate zones in the current building code will likely move to 6 with higher thermal performance requirements for windows.

Updated documents from the consultation process are due to be published in Nov 2021.

Each change has a transition period that allows existing projects to be completed using previous requirements and changes to be incorporated into new projects. A minimum transition period of 12 months will apply but may be increased to 24 months or longer depending on the nature and scale of the update.

For window glazing selection this will heighten the focus on higher-performing double and triple glazing, to achieve the proposed and future performance requirements.
