8.15 I.T. Shielding
Electronic eavesdropping to obtain proprietary information, unwarranted interrogation
of computers and interference
or accidental loss of information by electronic noise
(eg radar), can pose serious and costly problems in today’s
Information Technology (I.T.) reliant age.
Protecting premises where such installations are housed can be achieved by employing Faradays cage principle thereby ensuring all the external surfaces (ie the floor, the ceiling, and all walls) are electrically conductive and then earthed. Consequently, any radio frequency emitted from equipment meets the walls and simply travels to the ground. Similarly, any random external electronic interference is also diverted to ground.
As glazing systems are an integral part of most external walls, they also need to be electrically conductive.
Metro GlassTech can supply a range of specialised products that effectively shield radio frequencies within the range of 100 - 10,000 MHz. For applications where protection is required in the lower bracket of 10 - 100 MHz, a metallised fabric mesh is incorporated within a laminated glass product. Data shielding systems are recommended for use in television and radio stations, security and computer installations and protecting operating personnel from harmful electromagnetic fields.
8.16 Electrical Conducting
Pilkington TEC glass is an electrical conduction glass for use in commercial
refrigeration, heated mirrors, static control and thin film photovoltaics.
Resistances are available in 8, 70, 250 and 1000 ohms per square. TEC glass is neutral in colour and uses a durable pyrolitic coating which can be toughened, laminated or made into an IGU.
8.17 Switchable Glass
Privacy at the flick of a switch is possible with Switchable Vision Privacy Glass. This is state of the art laminated glass with a liquid crystal interlayer between two sheets of glass.
In clear mode an electrical current is passed through
the interlayer which aligns the microscopic crystals along a number of parallel axes, thus allowing vision through
When privacy is required the current is switched off and the crystals scatter into a random formation which prevents vision through the glass.
It is suitable for a variety of applications in security, architectural and
display projects and as it is laminated it
also provides good acoustic properties.
Special framing and wiring is required, and the product is limited in size to 2700 x 914mm. Thickness is normally 6.5, 10.5 or 12.5mm.
Variable Tint Glass that controls sunlight levels at the turn of a dial is also available. This product contains a revolutionary interlayer that uses suspended particle technology to control the light passing through normal clear glass. This technology allows you to control how clear or dark the glass is, and this is acheived via a dimmer switch or automatically with a sensing device.
Special framing and wiring is required and the product is limited in size to 2500 x 1200mm. Thickness is normally 6.5, 8.5, 10.5, 12.5 or 16.5mm and can be used in an IGU.
Horticultural glass is a low quality glass that may contain seeds or distortion which precludes its use as glazing quality glass. Generally 3mm or 4mm in thickness, the size range relates to the stock frame size used in glasshouse construction.
