GANZ Awards 2017

GANZ Awards 2017

Category: GANZ Designing with Glass

General comments on this category: There was a number of projects in this category which deserved recognition – rather more than the three finalists that were required to be found. As a consequence of this and exceptionally four finalists are selected. It was interesting to note that a good mix of heritage restoration and modern work was included in the category and that commercial, public and residential projects were represented. Overall, a broad spectrum of very good work.

Finalists:

  • Metro Performance Glass Christchurch for the Memorial Window in The Great Hall of the Arts Centre
  • Metro Performance Glass Christchurch for the Awly Building
  • Metro Performance Glass Palmerston North for Broadway Radiology/Aorangi Specialist Centre
  • The Glass Room for Clyde Road

Winner: Metro Performance Glass Christchurch for the Awly Building

Citation: A significant part of the post-earthquake rebuild this project depends almost entirely on its façade design to contribute to the dramatic effect it has on the street. Designed to meet stringent acoustic and shading criteria this work is characterised by a strong expression of texture and colour that make it immediately noticeable. Clearly one of the more successful projects in the restoration of the city the Awly Building makes a great contribution to the new Christchurch.

Category: GANZ Glass Innovation

General comments on this category: Another very large category containing a broad spectrum of work, much of it of very high quality: one of those situations in effect, where it would have been nice to have awarded several winners.

Finalists:

  • Metro Performance Glass Wellington for Hutt City Council Administration Building
  • Metro Performance Glass Auckland for Otahuhu Train and Bus Interchange
  • Metro Performance Glass Palmerston North for Broadway Radiology/Aorangi Specialist Centre

Winner: Metro Performance Glass Wellington for Hutt City Council Administration Building

Citation:  This project is an excellent piece of upgrading combined with heritage restoration work. In the course of the work a previous façade is revealed and at the same time transformed by being wrapped in a bold new patterned curtain wall. It is a delight to see glass used in such a clever juggling act that simultaneously respects the past while acknowledging the present.

ECO Award

General comments on this category: This category draws from projects in all the other categories. While environmental issues are very properly present in almost all projects these days, they are more prominent in some than in others. It is especially in larger commercial projects that the cost savings resulting from good initial design are most obvious. There are four finalists.

Finalists:

  • Metro Performance Glass Christchurch for the Awly Building
  • Metro Performance Glass Auckland for the Euroclass Head Office
  • Altherm Taranaki for the White Heart Hotel
  • Rylock Auckland for the Hypatia Building

Winner: Metro Performance Glass Auckland for the Euroclass Head Office

Citation: Confronting some serious challenges in both acoustic and thermal design this building rises to the challenge with a complex and effective suite of design solutions. The high performance façade has been proven in-use to meet the requirements of the demanding specification. The building, , demonstrates, something especially important for this particular client, how well good glazing design can overcome unusually difficult site conditions.

Judges Special Award

There were several projects of great merit which nevertheless got edged out for the overall award in their categories. There was one area, however, in which a project was very impressive and there was no award category to recognise just what was so good about it. That category was Illuminated Glass, or perhaps Lighting Design in Glass. So, recognising the transformational effect that a combination of good lighting and good use of glass in a building can have, a Special Award is given to…

Metro Performance Glass Palmerston North for Broadway Radiology/Aorangi Specialist Centre too.

The citation reads: “This apparently straightforward addition to the top levels of the building provides the client with an opportunity to dramatically vary its appearance by multi-coloured illumination. The patterned glazing, attractive enough in normal daylight, becomes a transformative feature at night. The designers have leveraged this aspect of the glazing to great effect.”
